Mamagoto, India’s leading Pan-Asian café opens its yellow doors for the 9th time, at Chennai. Founded in January 2010 in Delhi, Mamagoto literally translated from Japanese means “to play with food”, and that is the very ethos of the concept – to make Asian eating fun, unpretentious and casual.
Launching in the hub of the city’s commercial and residential hub, on KNK road, off Nungambakkam high road, Mamagoto brings its award winning Asian street hawker cuisine. With its famed signature bowls, robata grill, asian salads, dim sum, wok dishes and curries – experimental flavours from China, Thailand, Japan and South East Asian combine with the super quirky manga inspired graphic design to create a space filled with energy and yumminess.
The space is beaming with light and color, natural forms of wood, metal and threads intertwined with graphic art. Mamagoto’s brand new Teppanyaki grill also makes it’s debut in Chennai. Open all day and with a bespoke juice bar with flavored coconut water and detox juices, the décor is also given further tweaks to welcome the foodies of the city. Also on display will be Mamagoto’s merchandise “Mamashop” a eclectic mix of cushion covers, mugs, t – shirts to add to the quirky design buff in you. Young, urban and always casual, its time for no-frills dining, its time to unwind with friends, its time to lose your table manners, its time for Mamagoto chennai.

Stri’s Take On It:
If you had followed my other restaurant reviews, you will see a pattern of how I review. This post will however be an anomaly. The main reason for it being the fact that I tried most of the dishes at this place, and also the fact that writing about everything will make the post unnecessarily lengthy.
This is one the very few Pan-Asian restaurants that I have been too. When I got the invite, I was a little excited and worried at the same time.
Excited because I wanted to try this place for so long and the opportunity came, and worried because most of the so-called Pan-Asian restaurants had disappointed me in the past.
This place, however, was full of surprises. Be it the food or the taste, the ambiance or the add-ons, this place was indeed one of the finest dining places in Chennai.
- The cuisine is unique, authentic, and exotic.
- The quantity and VFM is well justified for a restaurant of this class.
- Ambiance is the biggest turn on.
- Mocktails here are worth dying for, and so was the traditional Thai noodles.
- Service is a little lousy. They couldn’t handle orders when the restaurant was full.
- Most of the desserts and few dishes were unavailable.
Bottom line: A little bit of training needed in service and supplies front, otherwise this restaurant is sheer brilliance.
Do I recommend? Yes!
Will I go again? Yes!
My personal favorites? Kiwi Mint Collins, Street Style Veg Dumplings, Teriyaki Meal in a Bowl.
P.S: Meal was sponsored. However, the review is honest and unbiased.
